Automated reporting for copyright collecting societies
A licensed radio station has to report to copyright collecting societies: which songs were played, how many times, who wrote the lyrics, and who wrote the music. Across 10 channels, that’s a huge amount of data, and information about rights holders isn’t always available.
A manager uploads Excel reports from RadioBoss (radio station management software). Our Laravel system processes and stores them and matches them against the internal rights holder database.
To find rights holder information, we wrote scrapers that emulate a browser. They scan the websites of collecting societies, MusicBrainz, and Discogs and use the artist and song title to find the lyricists and composers. Data that isn’t publicly available is enriched from several sources.
Three Excel reports for RAO (the Russian Authors’ Society) are generated automatically for each channel: a report on the tracks played and how often, a report on advertising integrations, and a summary report. Rights holders are paid in proportion to how often their works are played on air.
